Death Threats: You Gonna Kill Me Now?

You’ve been working the door for over a year and are feeling pretty secure in your job. The boys like you, the rest of the staff thinks you are great, and the patrons say you are the golden child. You think to yourself: “I get paid for this? Pretty sweet gig.”

Then one night you kick out a guy for fighting. You’ve done it dozens of times before and this one goes off without a hitch. Almost. The guy gets outside and turns to face you. In a calm and deliberate voice he says: ”That was a mistake. You’re fucking dead. I’m gonna kill you. I’ll remember you. I’ll remember your face. You have no idea who you are messing with. I’ll find where you live. Trust me.”

The first time you get a death threat, your stomach will drop. I don’t care how tough you are. A death threat is a serious thing and a gun will quickly even the odds in any fight. Was the guy serious? Who is he? Does he have connections? All of these thoughts will run through your head.

I’d like to say after a few years working the door, you get to know who walks the walk and who talks the talk. But you never can be too sure. Anyone could be a potential murderer now a days. You have to be guarded.

Come backs, as they are called in the business, do happen from time to time. You will piss off some half crazed drug dealer who has no respect for you or anyone around you. They’ll want to kill you (or hurt you REAL bad) just because you tossed them out one night.

Out of every 100 death threats your get, 99.8% of them are empty. But when your well being is on the line, is it worth gambling that .2%? If you get a death threat you must evaluate the situation first.

1) Who is the person? Do you know them? Are they a regular?
2) Most people who want to REALLY kill or injure you won’t tell you.
3) Drunk people say the stupidest things. Are they just wasted?
4) How old are they? Do they seen to have anything to loose?

You must gage these factors when the death threat comes your way. Your gut will be your greatest ally here. If you can’t read it, ask a fellow doorman for his opinion (if you trust it).

Next, you have to deal with the threat itself. Here are some of the options available to you.

1) Repeat the threat out loud so other people can here it. “You are going to kill me?” Point at the guy, and have your dozen witnesses stare at him. Point to the camera that has him on tape now. “Anything happens to me, you’ll be the first guy the police go after.”
2) Uttering threats is an offense and someone can be arrested for it. Just grabbing the guy, calling the cops and having it on record, will prevent the asshole from further actions.
3) Volley a threat back. “I can assure you the people I know in this business (nightclub) that are unimaginably more dangerous than you. Don’t open a can of worms here , junior.”
4) “Well, since I am dead, I guess my entire door staff will have to break you in half (cripple, stomp, kill, destroy, wreck) so you don’t get that chance. You have to kill everyone then.”

Death threats are par for the course in this business. I am not saying that they are right, only that they are a fact of (night) life.

Be Safe
